Connecting Across the World: My American Penpal

Introduction

When I was in high school, my English teacher assigned us with writing to a penpal in the United States. I was thrilled at the opportunity to connect with someone from across the world and learn about their culture. Little did I know that this assignment would lead to a long-lasting friendship and deepen my understanding of the world outside of my own country.

Discovering Our Differences

As soon as I received a letter back from my penpal, I could feel the excitement building up inside of me. I read her letter over and over again, fascinated by the differences in our cultures. She talked about her school and her weekend plans, which included activities that were foreign to me, such as going to a baseball game and eating food at a diner. I, in turn, wrote about my life here in Asia, the food, traditions, and practices that were familiar to me but would seem so strange to her.

As we continued to write back and forth, we discovered more and more differences. For example, our education systems were vastly different. While I had to study extremely hard to get into and maintain good grades in my high school, my penpal explained that as long as she did the work, she would receive passing grades. We also found that our countries' social norms were different. For instance, in my country, it is customary to bow to show respect to someone older, whereas in the United States, a handshake is more common.

Bridging the Cultural Divide

Despite our differences, my penpal and I found common ground in our love of music, movies, and books. We would talk about our favorite bands, the latest films, and the books we were reading. As we talked more and more about these shared interests, our cultural differences seemed to disappear, and we began to realize that the world, despite being so far away, is not so different after all.

The most meaningful moments in our letters were when we talked about the bigger issues in our respective countries, such as politics, religion, and the economy. Though we did not always agree with each other's viewpoints, it was important for us to hear these differing opinions. As we navigated these oftentimes difficult and sensitive issues, we came to realize that the world is not black and white, and there are many shades of gray.

Conclusion

Writing to my penpal not only helped me to improve my English but also taught me valuable lessons about culture and understanding. As I continued to write to her over the years, I saw how her country changed, how technology improved, and how the world continued to evolve. Through it all, our friendship and connection remained strong, even when we were miles apart. I am grateful for the opportunity to have written to my American penpal, and I hope that others can likewise experience the richness that comes from connecting with someone from a completely different part of the world.
